By right of birth, and for one time at least, these are problems put to philosophy as problems philosophy cannot resolve. In other words, in order to frame the representation of the secret, I must negate the first negation, in which I promised not to tell the secret: I must tell the secret to myself as if I were someone else. The second relating to difference , sometimes referred to as espacement or "spacing" concerns the force that differentiates elements from one another, and in so doing engenders binary oppositions and hierarchies that underpin meaning itself. Phenomenology re-introduced the idea of essential insight into philosophy - in other words, one cannot understand what time is, or even what Aristotle meant by chronos , merely by reciting his definition of it - one must rather have an intuition of time. This essential insight represents the essentialism of Husserlian phenomenology. Though animated by the demand for essential insight, Heidegger nonetheless recognizes that we only have access to these essences by means of the very tradition which obscures them if it is treated dogmatically.

The idea a contemporary German has of time can only be gained on the basis of his language and culture, which has its roots says Heidegger in ancient Greek language and thought.

Thus to understand any of the basic terms which are foundational to thought and philosophy truth, reason, being, etc. This can not be done by a simple leap, say, by picking up a translation of Parmenides. One must work backwards through each of the layers of the tradition in order to free oneself of the continual distortions the tradition has perpetrated, and only then may one understand in its simplicity and profundity the words of the ancient Greek thinkers.

This process of gradually working backwards through the distortions of past philosophers is Destruktion. As one can see it does not at all mean that we are doing away with the tradition and creating something else, but rather that we are returning to its origins.

Heidegger often uses the term Abbauen as a synonym for Destruktion , and both terms might better be described as a kind of dismantling, where we are examining and preserving the parts of the edifice, rather than annihilating them. As a final note on Destruktion , I will add that this process is not turned exclusively towards the past but contains a strong futural component.

It is out of our openness to our own future and its demands that the meaning of these past texts returns to us - they never become rigidified as they would in a textbook of philosophy. There is nothing absolute about the idea that so-called western culture originated in ancient Greece, and the thinkers Heidegger returns to again and again themselves had multiple traditions and languages out of which their thought developed, much of which is lost to history.

Derrida is saying that the kind of essential insight Heidegger sought to recapture through Destruktion is ultimately impossible even through these means, because at the bottom of history we find a language and thought which is still arbitrary and contingent. Derrida still affirms the necessity of something like Destruktion to the project of philosophy, and one sees him throughout his work tracing the development of different philosophical ideas.

There are also a number of interviews in Points… which cover similar terrain. Derrida always points out that deconstruction is opposed to criticism which, like its Greek root krinein , refers to the separating and distinguishing of meanings, while deconstruction is always open as well to the possibility of dissemination, the possibility that a text is ironic or animated by no intention-to-signify whatsoever.

Your description of the relation of deconstruction to binary thought is accurate - deconstruction is a non-positional discourse. One does not say that something is good or bad, true or false, when one deconstructs, but rather shows how both positions are similarly unstable and untenable.

Deconstruction is definitely not the application of Destruktion to a limited field of inquiry, such as the text, which you mention in your question. First of all, textuality is not regional for Derrida. It refers to what he time and again calls generalized writing, which is what we arrive at when the traditional concept of writing is deconstructed. If we think of this as meaning that everything is a text in the sense of words on a page then we are still trapped within the traditional definition - Derrida is showing us that textuality cannot be contained within such limits.

From Critchley and Schroeder eds. A deconstruction frees up the repressed senses, the silenced voices, the excluded and marginalized elements that succumb to the violence of the tradition. On the other hand, Derrida's deconstruction of Western metaphysics, as performed, for example, in 'Writing and Difference' or 'Margins of Philosophy,' is a strictly rigorous method of deconstructing metaphysical concepts by exposing the binary dichotomies upon which they are basedbeing and non-being, presence and absence, speech and writing, identity and difference, and so onand then showing how one term is privileged over the other: being over non-being, presence over absence, speech over writing, identity over difference.

By re-privileging the de-privileged term in the binary dichotomy, Derrida attempts to deconstruct these metaphysical concepts by showing how they are based upon the systematic repression of the deprivileged term non-being, absence, writing, difference, etc. Neither Heidegger's Destruktion of classical ontology nor Derrida's deconstruction of Western metaphysics can then be described as a strictly rigorous philosophical system, which is what makes describing them in a few words so difficultif not impossible!

But I'd suggest reading Derrida's 'Differance' and 'Ousia and Gramme' against Heidegger's 'The Anaximander Fragment' for a shorter introduction to the de con structive methods they employ. And good luck with that! It took me twenty years to think that I understood them, and I'm probably wrong Sign up to join this community. The best answers are voted up and rise to the top.

Jacques Derrida (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)

22.11.2006 · For Derrida, Husserl’s descriptions imply that the living present, by always folding the recent past back into itself, by always folding primary memory into the present perception, involves a difference in the very middle of it (Voice and Phenomenon, p. 56). In other words, in the very moment, when silently I speak to myself, it must be the case that there is a minuscule hiatus ...

Derrida's deconstruction, as far as I understand it, is to critically examine values as embodied in binary situations like signifier and signified where there is an implicit hierarchy of value - one term is dominant, the other is ottavianelli.eu judgements are in fact structurally neccesary. Deconstruction overturns this judgement to understand and appraise the shape of the entire situation. 22/3/ · Derrida’s Concept of Differance. Jacques Derrida was a prolific Difference Derrida who had the disconcerting ability to use a thousand words when one or two would do. I will speak, therefore, of a letter. I will speak of the letter athis initial letter which it apparently has been necessary Difference Derrida insinuate, here and there, into the writing of the word difference; and to do so in Difference Derrida course of a Difference Derrida on writing, and also of a writing within writhing, whose different trajectories thereby find themselves, at certain very determined points, intersecting with a kind of gross spelling mistake, a lapse in the discipline and law which regulate writing and keep it seemly.

Derrida also had the gift of seizing on detail and spinning out his observations into thoughts and thoughts into positions. Although the bricoleur is a hunter-gatherer of cultural ideas, one should not confuse the hunting activity with an allegorical assemblage with multiple parts.

His extensive study of myths implied that the bi-polar myth was Nude Tsunade, a rather Kantian operation of a storytelling a priori.

These ideas of a hidden unconscious will be taken up by other writers and it is clear that the philosopher attended the famous lectures of Lacan who stated that the unconscious was structured like a language. But Derrida parted company with what he considered to be a nostalgic fixation on mythic origins. In this essay, Derrida dealt with the consequences of the bi-polar or opposing signs. Opposition of signs can be maintained only if one term is believed to be final, but because the terms are paired in difference, there can never be a final term, only be an endless play of signification.

As he said. Ever fond of reversals, Derrida proposed that writing, a non-being, emerges out of silence, a necessary non-being that precedes being. It other words, that which is to be signified meant, expressed must precede that a which is the signifier. Logically, this reversal introduces the trace which exists as a force and formation of writing: the trace as an already-there precondition that precedes.

Thus, for Derrida, the sign marks Sheyla Hershey Porn absent presence, because rather than present the object, we employ the sign whose meaning is always deferred because the thing represented is always absent.

As Derrida Jill Diamond Fetish. Essentially and lawfully, every concept is inscribed to a chain or in a systematic play of differences. The difference of which Katara Nude speaks is itself, Gianna Distenca, neither a concept nor a word among others. In a language, in the system of languages, there are Difference Derrida differences. Difference Derrida like Being, the trace must be placed sous rature.

For Derrida the play of difference made it impossible to separate speech and writing. He argued that because language uses codes signs there is always a play of forms which assumes differences which are retained as traces.

This play of differences preexist language itself which has no origin.
