After a half-dozen experiences at Veterum Sapientia, I cannot praise too highly this program for full Latin immersion. Its clerical focus appeals to precisely an audience still bound by Church law to understand Latin well but who too frequently find that obligation impossible to fulfill. There are few events outside my abbey I find desirable to attend, but every year I look forward to returning to Charlotte for Veterum Sapientia. The workshop aimed to create a weeklong bubble of Latin in order to let us learn by listening and communicating in Latin, as we might learn any other language.

In spite of this, by the end of the week, I was carrying on simple conversations in Latin. Everyone tried to help one another learn, with a lot of patience for the beginners! The effective, friendly, Catholic learning environment that VSI creates is unmatched in the United States right now.
